Almost 7 500m of water and sewer pipes replaced in July

In keeping with its commitment to build resilient water and sanitation infrastructure, the City of Cape Town successfully replaced 7 469m of water and sewer pipes during last month alone.
July saw major work completed to rehabilitate the City's water and sewer pipe infrastructure. In total for the month, 4 093m of water pipes and 3 376m of sewer pipes were replaced. This is part of the City's annual water and sewer pipe replacement programme.
This work has taken place across several communities in Cape Town, including Simon's Town, Atlantis, Melkbos, Table View, Boston, Athlone and Gugulethu.
In Welgemoed, 1 782m of sewer pipes were replaced and, throughout Bellville, 1 195m of water pipes were replaced, both accounting for the largest amount of work done in each category for July.
Over the past financial year, the City spent R443,4 million on water and sewer pipe rehabilitation to improve the lives of Cape Town's residents.
'Cape Town has more than nine million meters of sewer pipeline servicing properties across the city. Our Water and Sanitation Directorate is committed to proactively maintain, rehabilitate, replace and upsize sewer pipelines to help prevent sewer blockages and overflows and maintain a healthy environment for residents.
'There are various reasons that necessitate this upgrade, most importantly, to rehabilitate ageing infrastructure and cater to population growth. By proactively replacing water pipes, the City is able to help reduce water wastage by upgrading old infrastructure and addressing any leaks, which supports the City's call to save water and for all of us to be water-wise at all times,' said Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation.
The City regrets any inconvenience caused as this work gets under way in various areas. It is however necessary to better cater to the residents' water and sanitation needs.
